Letters - Put up the barriers

Published 11 July 2005

It is laughable to present Gordon Brown (Interview, 4 July), a main advocate of the free-trade policies that have held down the third world since the colonial era, as a crusading friend of the poor.

Europe and the US developed not through free trade, but through policies condemned today as protectionist. It is no coincidence that Japan and other Asian states that were never colonised or forced to open their markets have achieved comparable development.
